Mumbai, Oct 8, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 2B of Mumbai Metro Line-3, popularly known as the Aqua Line, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban transport system. This final stretch, spanning 10.99 km from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, was built at a cost of ₹12,200 crore, bringing the total project cost to around ₹37,270 crore. With the completion of Phase 2B, the Aqua Line becomes Mumbai’s first fully underground metro corridor, connecting 27 stations across major residential, commercial, and heritage areas of the city. The Aqua Line will significantly reduce travel time for commuters. Previously, journeys across these parts of the city could take up to two hours due to heavy traffic. Now, passengers can travel from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR in just one hour. The line is expected to serve around 13 lakh passengers daily, providing a fast, safe, and convenient mode of transport. Fares are structured based on distance, ranging from ₹10 for up to 3 km to ₹60 for journeys covering 30–36 km. This makes the metro a cost-effective alternative to road travel, especially during peak hours. The corridor enhances connectivity to important hubs such as Nariman Point, Fort, Kalbadevi, the Reserve Bank of India, the Bombay Stock Exchange, and Mantralaya, benefiting professionals and daily commuters. Additionally, the Aqua Line provides direct access to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, greatly easing travel for air passengers from southern parts of Mumbai. Integration with Central Railway at CSMT and Western Railway at Mumbai Central and Churchgate ensures seamless travel across multiple transport modes. Construction of Metro Line-3 began in 2017 under the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL). The project involved over 15,000 workers at peak construction. For the first time in India, 17 Tunnel Boring Machines were deployed simultaneously, setting a national record for underground construction. The engineering achievement demonstrates India’s capability to execute large-scale urban infrastructure projects efficiently while minimizing disruption to city life. Alongside the metro inauguration, Prime Minister Modi launched the “Mumbai One” mobility app, designed to integrate digital ticketing, trip planning, and cashless payments across 11 transport operators, including all metro lines, monorail, BEST buses, suburban rail, and Navi Mumbai Metro. The app allows commuters to plan multi-modal journeys effortlessly, reducing wait times and queues, and promoting a smoother, more efficient urban travel experience. The completion of Phase 2B marks the final stage of Mumbai Metro Line-3, a project that will revolutionize daily commutes, strengthen connectivity, and support sustainable urban transport. The Aqua Line is a significant step towards modernizing Mumbai’s infrastructure, promoting eco-friendly transport, and providing residents with reliable, comfortable, and fast mobility across the city. This landmark development reinforces the government’s vision of transforming urban transportation and improving the quality of life for Mumbai’s citizens.
