Governor’s Grandson Accused: Woman Claims Abuse, Dowry Demands And Fight For Her Missing Child
Bhopal | December 04, 2025 A young woman from Madhya Pradesh has brought forward disturbing allegations against her husband, Devendra Gehlot, the grandson of Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot. She has accused him and his family of dowry harassment, violent abuse, an attempt on her life, and keeping her four-year-old daughter away from her. The case came to light when she approached Ratlam police officials, pleading for urgent help and the safe return of her child. Divya Gehlot said her marriage began on a hopeful note when she married Devendra on April 29, 2018, under the Chief Minister’s Kanyadaan Yojana in Tal. The event was attended by senior political leaders, which made her believe she was entering a respected home. But she claims her life changed soon after she reached her new house. According to her, details about Devendra’s drinking habits, drug use and alleged affairs had been hidden from her before the wedding. She alleged that she soon became a target of pressure, violence and continuous taunts asking her to bring ₹50 lakh from her family. She said the harassment only grew stronger with time. During her pregnancy in 2021, she claims she was beaten, denied food and mentally tortured. After her daughter was born, she hoped things would get better, but according to her, the treatment worsened. A settlement attempt in 2019 brought no change, and Divya said the violence in the home became a daily nightmare. One of the most frightening moments, she said, happened on January 26. She alleged that Devendra came home drunk, threatened to kill her if she didn’t bring money, and pushed her off the rooftop. She fell into the gallery below and suffered severe injuries to her spine, shoulder and waist. She claims she was left without help through the night. The next morning, she was taken to a hospital in Nagda and then shifted to a hospital in Indore. She says her parents were never informed and were instead pressured to pay her medical bills once they found out. Divya said the deepest wound for her is that her four-year-old daughter is still not with her. She alleges that her in-laws have kept the child in Nagda and refuse to let her meet her. When she visited the school in November hoping to see her daughter, she claims her husband stopped her and warned her that she would not be allowed near the child unless she brought money from her parents. In her written complaint, she said she fears for her daughter’s wellbeing and cried that only a mother can care for her child the way she should. Since Divya is staying with her parents in Ratlam, she first approached Ratlam Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar. As many of the incidents took place in Nagda, she was advised to file her complaint with officials in Ujjain district as well. Ratlam Police have accepted her application and forwarded it to the concerned authorities. When asked about the allegations, former MLA Jitendra Gehlot, the woman’s father-in-law, gave a brief response saying that anyone can make accusations and that he would present all facts to the media. The case is now moving toward a formal investigation, and Divya continues to appeal for her daughter’s safe return as she waits for the next steps from authorities.
