Ranchi, December 21, 2025: A 40-year-old Indian Army personnel has been arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Jharkhand for allegedly raping a woman inside an empty coach of an Army special train at Tatisilwai Railway Station near Ranchi. The incident reportedly took place on the evening of December 18 and has raised serious concerns over safety at railway premises. According to police officials, the woman was waiting at Tatisilwai station around 5.30 pm to board a train to Ranchi when the accused allegedly approached her. The police said the man forcibly dragged the woman into an empty coach of a stationary Army special train and sexually assaulted her after threatening her with dire consequences if she raised an alarm. The situation came to light after nearby people heard the woman’s cries for help. Railway staff were alerted, and along with police personnel, members of the public rushed towards the coach. The accused allegedly tried to resist arrest and sustained injuries during a scuffle before being taken into custody by the GRP. The accused has been identified as Ajit Singh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, who is currently posted with the 42 Medium Regiment of the Indian Army in Patiala, Punjab. Police confirmed that he was on duty-related movement at the time of the incident and that the train involved was not a passenger train but an Army special train stationed on one of the railway lines. A senior railway official clarified that the incident did not occur on a passenger platform. He said the alleged crime took place on line number three, where the Army train was parked. “This was not a regular passenger service. The coach was part of a special Army train stationed on a non-passenger line,” the official said. The official further explained that the case was registered at GRP Ranchi as the police station has jurisdiction over incidents occurring between Ranchi and Muri. “Any crime reported in this stretch is handled by GRP Ranchi, which is why the complaint was lodged there,” he added. Police officials confirmed that the survivor is an adult and not a minor. Following the complaint, a case was registered based on the woman’s statement, and an investigation was immediately launched. The survivor was sent for a medical examination, and her detailed statement is being recorded in accordance with legal procedures. The accused was produced before a local court on December 19 and was remanded to judicial custody. Police said further questioning will be conducted as part of the investigation to establish the sequence of events and gather additional evidence.
