Washington | January 19, 2026 Former US President Donald Trump has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be part of a proposed international “Board of Peace” aimed at supporting long-term peace in Gaza. The invitation is part of the second phase of a ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas, which seeks to end years of conflict in the region. The invitation was shared by the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, who released the letter written by Trump to PM Modi. In the letter, Trump described the initiative as a “historic and magnificent effort” and said it represents a bold new way to resolve global conflicts. He said the board would bring together respected world leaders who are committed to achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. Trump also referred to his earlier 20-point roadmap for ending the Gaza war and said the Board of Peace would help guide and monitor developments under the next phase of the ceasefire. According to the proposal, member countries would initially serve a three-year term. Reports suggesting that a $1 billion contribution could secure a permanent seat were rejected by the White House, which called such claims misleading. Apart from India, several other countries have been invited, including Australia, Hungary, Vietnam, Pakistan, Jordan, Turkey, Egypt, Canada and Argentina. As per reports, Hungary and Vietnam have already accepted the offer. India has not yet officially responded. The invitation comes at a sensitive time, as India and the US are also engaged in important trade talks following the US government’s decision to impose steep tariffs on India over its oil trade with Russia. The invitation was shared by the US Ambassador to India, who released Trump’s letter praising India’s global role and leadership. Trump described the initiative as a historic effort to bring stability to the Middle East through a new and bold approach. According to the letter, the Board of Peace is linked to the second phase of a ceasefire plan between Israel and Hamas. Trump said the board would bring together respected world leaders who are committed to ending conflict and ensuring lasting peace. India is among several countries approached for this role, though New Delhi has not yet officially responded. If India agrees, it would serve on the board for a three-year term. Reports suggesting that countries could secure a permanent seat by paying $1 billion were dismissed by the White House as misleading. The board’s main task would be to closely monitor developments in Gaza and guide peace efforts under the proposed framework. The invitation comes at a sensitive time, as India and the US are also holding important trade talks following Washington’s recent decision to impose higher tariffs on Indian goods linked to oil trade with Russia. Other countries invited to the board include Australia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Egypt, Canada and Turkey, with Hungary and Vietnam already accepting the offer.
