New Delhi | 28 March 2026 The government on Friday firmly dismissed rumours of a possible lockdown and reassured citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG across the country. In an inter-ministerial briefing, officials stated that supply chains are functioning smoothly and fuel stocks remain adequate despite rising global tensions in West Asia. Citizens were urged not to panic or believe misinformation circulating on social media, as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Amid a sharp increase in global crude oil prices, the Centre announced a reduction of ₹10 per litre in excise duty on petrol and diesel to protect consumers from rising fuel costs. At the same time, export duties have been imposed on diesel and aviation turbine fuel to ensure sufficient domestic availability. Officials also confirmed that refiners have been directed to divert a significant portion of fuel meant for export into the local market, ensuring uninterrupted supply across the country. Authorities highlighted that all refineries are operating at high capacity, with sufficient crude reserves in place. While isolated instances of panic buying have been reported in some areas, retail fuel outlets continue to function normally. To prevent hoarding and black marketing, enforcement agencies have conducted thousands of raids and taken strict action, including the seizure of LPG cylinders. Additionally, domestic LPG production has been increased, and supply to key sectors such as hospitality and food processing is being prioritised. The government further assured that natural gas supply for households and transport remains stable, with city gas companies instructed to prioritise essential services. Maritime operations and port activities are also functioning without disruption, and Indian seafarers in the Gulf region are reported to be safe. Emphasising preparedness, officials said Indian missions abroad are actively assisting citizens amid travel disruptions. The Centre reiterated its commitment to ensuring stability and urged people to rely only on official information, use resources responsibly, and cooperate during this period of global uncertainty.
