36-Year-Old Sarla Bhat Case Moves Forward as Chargesheet Filed Against Yasin Malik and Others
New Delhi, June 29, 2026 A decades-old case linked to one of Kashmir’s most turbulent periods has returned to public focus after investigators formally advanced legal proceedings. The development marks another step in revisiting unresolved cases from the early years of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir and reflects renewed efforts to pursue long-pending investigations through the judicial process. The State Investigation Agency (SIA) has filed a chargesheet in the alleged abduction, sexual assault and murder case of nurse Sarla Bhat, an incident dating back to 1990. The chargesheet names Yasin Malik along with four members associated with the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), bringing the matter before a special TADA court for trial proceedings. According to investigators, Sarla Bhat was working as a nurse in Srinagar when she was abducted during a period marked by targeted violence and unrest. Authorities stated that the case was re-examined after being reopened and that the renewed investigation included documentary records, medical findings and other supporting evidence collected over the course of the inquiry. The filing of the chargesheet does not amount to a conviction, and the accused will face trial under the legal process. The case now moves to the next stage in court, where evidence and arguments presented during proceedings will determine the final outcome.
