Noida | September 25, 2025 A shocking incident unfolded in Noida earlier this week when an Uber driver allegedly threatened a group of women passengers with a rod after a heated argument over the route to be taken. Police have since arrested the accused, identified as Brijesh Kumar, 38, from his residence in Haibatpur, and seized his Maruti Suzuki Ertiga car. The Incident: Dispute Over Route Choice According to police reports, the incident occurred on Tuesday morning near Golf Course metro station. Passenger Tashu Gupta, along with four friends, had booked a cab from the Botanical Garden metro station to Sector 128. The altercation began when Gupta requested the driver to use an underpass instead of making a U-turn in order to avoid traffic congestion. Brijesh allegedly ignored her request and responded with hostility. The argument quickly escalated, with Gupta later reporting that he became aggressive, verbally abusive, and intimidating. Video Evidence Goes Viral A video of the confrontation, recorded by one of the passengers, went viral on social media. In the footage, Brijesh can be heard demanding money, to which the women questioned, “Money for what?” When they began filming, the driver reportedly demanded that they delete the video. Gupta later shared her ordeal online, claiming the driver abused her, threatened her with violence, and refused to stop the vehicle when asked. “He told me to do whatever I want, go get him hanged, and continued abusing me,” she wrote. Threat with a Rod According to Gupta’s police complaint, the situation worsened when the driver pulled over and stepped out of the vehicle. He allegedly opened the trunk of his car, retrieved a white rod, and threatened the women directly. Gupta recalled his words: “Tu ruk, tujhe abhi batata hun. Aaj tujhe maar ke jail bhi jana pade to chala jaunga” (“Wait, I will show you right now. Even if I have to kill you and go to jail today, I will do it”). She claimed he was prepared to strike them with the rod before the women managed to escape and report the matter. Police Action Taking cognisance of the viral video and Gupta’s formal complaint, the Sector 39 police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 115(2) (causing hurt), Section 352 (breach of peace), and Section 351(3) (criminal intimidation). Brijesh was arrested shortly thereafter, and his car was impounded. Uber’s Response Following the viral posts, Uber issued a statement directly to Gupta, acknowledging the seriousness of the matter: “Hey there, this is concerning. Such behaviour is unacceptable, and we prioritise your safety above all else. Kindly send your registered Uber account contact details through Direct Message, and our safety team will contact you shortly.” Public Safety Concerns The case has raised renewed concerns about passenger safety in ride-hailing services. While Uber has assured cooperation and investigation, the arrest highlights the urgent need for stricter background checks, swift complaint redressal, and better monitoring mechanisms for drivers. For Gupta and her friends, the ordeal was harrowing — what began as a routine commute quickly escalated into a frightening confrontation. The police have assured the women that strict legal action will be pursued against the accused.
