Heavy Rainfall and Stormy Weather to Disrupt Travel in Southern India and Andaman Region
New Delhi | November 24, 2025 Southern India and the Andaman region are preparing for days of intense weather as a developing system over the Bay of Bengal strengthens into a cyclonic storm. According to the IMD’s latest forecast issued on November 23, heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected from November 24 onward, affecting major travel routes and coastal areas. The weather disturbance began as a well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and the South Andaman Sea. It is expected to intensify into a depression and later a cyclonic storm within 48 hours. This system is likely to move west-northwest, bringing widespread rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Andaman & Nicobar Islands will face the longest impact, with heavy to very heavy rainfall predicted from November 24 to 26, and continued heavy showers through November 28. Tamil Nadu and Kerala, which received rain on November 23, are expected to see the peak of the spell on November 24. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam will also receive rainfall, though with lower intensity. Thunderstorms with lightning and winds touching 40–50 kmph are expected over several regions. Maritime areas—including the Andaman Sea, south and central Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and waters off the Tamil Nadu coast—may see winds gusting up to 60 kmph on November 24 and 25, creating unsafe conditions for fishermen. Temperatures are also likely to drop by 2–3°C over northwest India and Maharashtra in the coming four days. Meanwhile, parts of western Uttar Pradesh may see dense fog on the night and morning of November 24, affecting road visibility. Residents and travellers across affected regions are advised to stay updated and take precautions as the weather system evolves.
