India-EU Trade Pact a Game Changer, PM Modi Calls It the ‘Mother of All Deals’
New Delhi | 27 January, 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised the India–European Union Free Trade Agreement, calling it the “mother of all deals”. He said the agreement will create huge opportunities for people and businesses in both India and Europe, while strengthening ties between two of the world’s biggest economies. According to the Prime Minister, the pact represents 25 per cent of global GDP and almost one-third of global trade, making it extremely significant on the world stage. Speaking ahead of the 16th India-EU Summit in Delhi, PM Modi said, “Yesterday a big agreement was signed between the European Union and India. People are calling this the mother of all deals.” He added that the agreement reflects a strong partnership between major global economies and will benefit citizens on both sides. The summit will include high-level talks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa. The summit is being described as historic, as both India and the EU are set to formally announce the conclusion of negotiations on the long-pending Free Trade Agreement. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal confirmed that talks have been successfully completed and that the formal announcement will be made on Tuesday, January 27. He also said the agreement is likely to come into force next year after legal checks and formal signing. The deal has drawn global attention as well. On Republic Day, Ursula von der Leyen highlighted India’s growing role in the world, saying, “A successful India makes the world more stable, prosperous and secure. And we all benefit.” Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent raised concerns over the agreement during ongoing India-US trade talks, especially pointing to Europe’s purchase of refined Russian oil products from India.
