Mumbai | September 5, 2025 Tesla has officially marked its entry into the Indian automobile market with the delivery of its first Model Y to a customer in Mumbai. The milestone comes just weeks after the company inaugurated its first showroom in the country at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), generating significant buzz among electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts. The inaugural handover was made to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, who received his white Tesla Model Y at the ‘Tesla Experience Centre’ in Mumbai. A video shared by news agency ANI captured the moment, sparking excitement on social media. Tesla Model Y in India The Model Y, a global bestseller, is available in two India-specific variants: Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a 60kWh battery, priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Long Range RWD with a 75kWh battery, priced at ₹67.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The standard RWD offers a 500km claimed range and sprints from 0–100 kmph in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range extends range to 622km with a slightly quicker 5.6-second acceleration. Both versions feature a top speed of 201 kmph, 19-inch crossflow alloys, and support Supercharging, which adds up to 267km of range in just 15 minutes. Tesla has also introduced its Full Self-Driving package in India at an additional cost of ₹6 lakh. Customers can choose from six exterior colours, with Stealth Grey as standard, and opt for black or white interiors in a five-seat configuration. Heated seats are offered in both rows, while the front row also features ventilation. Demand and Market Outlook Despite global anticipation, Tesla’s bookings in India have been more modest than expected. So far, the company has received 600 bookings, falling short of its own internal projections, according to Bloomberg. The first batch of cars for India is being shipped from Tesla’s Shanghai facility, with between 350 and 500 vehicles expected to arrive this year. Deliveries and registrations are currently limited to Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram, with more handovers planned through the third quarter of 2025. India’s EV Growth While India’s EV market remains relatively small—comprising just 5% of total cars sold between April and July 2025—the growth trajectory is impressive. EV sales surged by 93% year-on-year, reaching 15,500 units during that period. Tesla’s entry is expected to further accelerate interest and adoption, especially in the premium segment. Booking and Availability Customers can book the Tesla Model Y via the company’s official India portal or through Tesla’s showrooms in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. For now, availability is restricted to these three cities, with expansion plans likely in the coming years as demand and infrastructure scale up. The Road Ahead Tesla’s arrival has been a long-anticipated development in India’s EV journey. With its cutting-edge technology, impressive range, and global reputation, the Model Y could reshape consumer perceptions around premium electric cars. The delivery of the first vehicle in Mumbai signals the start of what could be a transformative chapter for both Tesla and India’s evolving EV market.
