BJP Steps Up Preparations for New Uttar Pradesh State President as Senior Leaders Meet in Lucknow
Lucknow, December 13: With the election of a new Uttar Pradesh BJP president entering its final stage, senior leaders of the party held a high-level meeting in Lucknow on Friday to ensure a smooth and unanimous organisational transition. The discussions took place just a day before nominations are scheduled to be filed for the post that has remained vacant for nearly a year. The meeting was chaired by BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, who arrived in the state capital on Friday. It was held at the party’s state headquarters and lasted for almost two hours. Present at the meeting were current state BJP president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and state organisation general secretary Dharampal Singh. According to party sources, the primary focus of the meeting was to streamline the election process and ensure that the choice of the new state president takes place smoothly and without internal differences. The leadership aims to conclude the organisational election in a unanimous manner, reflecting unity within the party ahead of key political challenges in the state. A senior BJP leader who attended the meeting said the party would get its new state president on Sunday, December 14, in line with the procedures laid down in the BJP constitution. He added that district and mandal presidents from across Uttar Pradesh have been asked to remain present in Lucknow on the day of the election, indicating the importance the party is placing on the event. Mahendra Nath Pandey, who has been appointed as the organisational election officer for Uttar Pradesh, said that nominations for the post will be filed on Saturday between 1 pm and 2 pm at the BJP state office. He said the nomination process will take place in the presence of national general secretary and central election observer Vinod Tawde, ensuring adherence to organisational norms. The election process is scheduled to formally conclude on Sunday, when central election officer and Union minister Piyush Goyal will announce the name of the new Uttar Pradesh BJP president. Party insiders suggest that only a single nomination is likely to be filed, which means that voting may not be required. In such a scenario, the new president would be elected unopposed. Several names have been doing the rounds within political circles as possible contenders for the post. However, BJP leaders have been cautious about making predictions, pointing to the party’s high command, which is known for taking last-minute decisions and surprising even senior leaders. As a result, there is no clear frontrunner, and speculation continues till the final announcement. The new state president will replace Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, who completed his tenure around a year ago. Since then, the post has remained in suspense, with the party carefully weighing its options. The choice of the next president is considered crucial, as Uttar Pradesh remains a key political battleground and plays a major role in national politics. Meanwhile, the Lucknow unit of the BJP has begun preparations to give a grand welcome to the new state president. According to Praveen Garg, media incharge of the BJP’s Lucknow Mahanagar unit, elaborate arrangements are being planned across the city. These include saffron-themed decorations, welcome gates, selfie points, drums, fireworks and floral greetings. He said senior party leaders and specially formed committees are coordinating the arrangements to ensure a festive atmosphere on the day the new president is announced. The preparations reflect the party’s intention to project unity and enthusiasm at the organisational level. As the countdown to Sunday begins, all eyes remain on the BJP’s state headquarters in Lucknow. The decision is expected to set the tone for the party’s future strategy in Uttar Pradesh, making the election of the new state chief a closely watched political development.
