PM Modi to Visit Assam on December 20–21, to Inaugurate and Lay Foundation for Development Projects Worth ₹15,600 Crore
Guwahati/New Delhi, December 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on December 20 and 21, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for a series of major development projects valued at around ₹15,600 crore. The visit is expected to focus on improving infrastructure, boosting connectivity, supporting agriculture, and honouring Assam’s historical legacy, according to an official statement. The Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati at around 3 pm on December 20. His first major engagement will be the inauguration of the new integrated terminal building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. After the inauguration, he will address a public gathering in the city, where he is expected to outline the government’s vision for Assam’s development and its role in the growth of the Northeast. The newly constructed airport terminal is spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres and has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers every year. Along with the terminal, major upgrades have been carried out in runway facilities, apron areas, and overall airfield infrastructure. These improvements are aimed at meeting the growing air traffic demand and strengthening Assam’s position as a key aviation hub in the region. The terminal is being described as India’s first nature-themed airport facility. Its design reflects Assam’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage through the theme “Bamboo Orchids.” Locally sourced bamboo has been widely used in the interiors, while landscaping inspired by Kaziranga National Park, japi patterns, rhino symbols, and orchid-based architectural elements add a strong regional identity to the space. A major highlight of the terminal is the “Sky Forest,” which features nearly one lakh indigenous plants and is intended to give passengers a unique and welcoming experience. In terms of technology, the airport has been equipped with several modern, passenger-friendly features. These include DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, automated baggage handling systems, full-body scanners for enhanced security, and AI-driven operations to improve efficiency and crowd management. Officials believe these features will reduce waiting times and improve overall travel comfort. On December 21, Prime Minister Modi will begin the day by paying tribute to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Boragaon, Guwahati. The visit is seen as a gesture of respect towards those who sacrificed their lives during the movement and as recognition of Assam’s political and social history. Later in the day, the Prime Minister will travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district. There, he will perform the bhoomi pujan for the Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited. This project will be developed within the existing premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited at an estimated cost of over ₹10,600 crore. The fertilizer project is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the fertilizer needs of Assam and neighbouring states. By strengthening domestic fertilizer production, the project aims to support farmers, reduce dependency on imports, and ensure timely availability of essential agricultural inputs. Officials said the project would also create employment opportunities and contribute to industrial growth in the region. Overall, the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to Assam highlights the Centre’s focus on infrastructure development, regional connectivity, agricultural support, and cultural recognition. With projects spanning aviation, industry, and heritage, the visit is expected to have a lasting impact on the state’s economic growth and development trajectory.
