Six Arrested, ₹62 Lakh Recovered in ₹85-Lakh Daylight Highway Robbery in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur
Meerut | December 27, 2025 Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district have arrested six people and recovered ₹62 lakh in cash in connection with a daring ₹85-lakh daylight robbery that took place on the Hapur–Ghaziabad highway earlier this month. The crime, which unfolded near Saraswati Medical College on December 15, involved bike-borne assailants who targeted an accountant transporting a large amount of cash. According to the police, the robbery occurred when the accountant of a ghee and edible oil trader was travelling on a motorcycle with a bag full of cash. As he moved along the busy highway in broad daylight, a group of criminals on motorcycles approached him at high speed. CCTV footage from the area later showed the attackers overtaking the accountant, riding dangerously close to him, and then kicking his motorcycle to make him fall. The assailants then grabbed the cash-filled bag at gunpoint and fled the scene within moments. Superintendent of Police (SP) Hapur, Kunwar Gyananjay Singh, confirmed that the entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed along the highway. He said the footage played a key role in identifying the movement and actions of the criminals, helping investigators piece together how the robbery was carried out. After days of investigation, Pilkhuwa police received a tip-off on Friday night that the accused were planning to flee the area near Roopvati Inter College on Dhaulana Road. Acting swiftly, a police team set up a blockade at the spot. When a suspicious car and a motorcycle approached and were signalled to stop, the occupants tried to escape. However, the police managed to overpower them after a brief chase and arrested all six suspects. During the arrests, police recovered ₹62 lakh of the looted cash. They also seized a car and a motorcycle believed to have been used in the crime, a country-made pistol, two live cartridges, and five mobile phones. The recovered items are being examined further to gather more evidence. The arrested accused have been identified as Adnan, Saaved, and Naved, all residents of Sultanpur village in Amroha district; Lalit from Akbarpur Patti in Amroha district; Zeeshan from Khagoi village in Hapur district; and Sabir alias Bhola, a resident of Baksar village in Hapur district. During interrogation, the accused revealed that the robbery was carefully planned in advance. Police said Sabir alias Bhola and Zeeshan played a crucial role in conducting reconnaissance for the crime. Both were reportedly employed by the trader and were well aware that the accountant, Ajaypal, frequently carried large sums of cash during his travels. Using this inside information, they tracked his routine movements. Police said the duo followed the accountant from the Nizam Pur underpass to the service road on the day of the robbery. They continuously shared real-time location updates with their accomplices, allowing the attackers to choose the right moment and place to strike. For their role in providing information, Sabir and Zeeshan were allegedly paid ₹1 lakh each. SP Singh said that while six accused have been arrested, the investigation is far from over. Efforts are currently underway to trace and arrest four other criminals who are believed to be part of the robbery gang and are still absconding. Police teams are conducting raids at possible hideouts and are confident of making more arrests soon. The incident has once again raised concerns about highway safety and the risks faced by people transporting large amounts of cash. Police have advised traders to adopt safer methods of money transfer and to avoid carrying huge sums in cash whenever possible. With the arrests and major recovery made so far, police say the case is close to being fully solved, though the hunt for the remaining accused continues.
