Kanpur | December 27, 2025 A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, where a woman is accused of killing her husband by repeatedly attacking him with an axe after a prolonged argument at their home. The incident took place on Wednesday night in Tikra village, located in the Bithoor area, and has left the local community disturbed. According to police, the accused woman and her husband, identified as 45-year-old Pappu, had been drinking alcohol together when a heated dispute broke out between them. What began as a verbal argument reportedly stretched on for nearly two hours. During the fight, the woman allegedly lost control, picked up an axe kept inside the house, and attacked her husband multiple times on the head. Pappu, who worked with a tile and stone laying firm, collapsed on the floor in a pool of blood after being struck repeatedly. Despite his critical condition, immediate medical help was not provided. Family members later alleged that when they tried to rush him to a hospital, the woman argued with them and became aggressive, delaying treatment. Police said Pappu was eventually shifted to a private hospital, where doctors identified the injuries as being caused by a sharp weapon. He succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning during treatment. During the initial investigation, officers found signs suggesting an attempt to cover up the crime. Police said the floor of the house had bloodstains that appeared to have been cleaned. The woman allegedly misled her in-laws by giving a false explanation for Pappu’s injuries. However, medical findings raised serious doubts, prompting further police action. A post-mortem examination later revealed more than 10 severe injury marks on Pappu’s head. Investigators also found that apart from the axe, blunt objects such as a rolling pin and a grinding stone may have been used during the assault, indicating extreme violence. Another disturbing detail emerged during the police inspection of the house. The couple’s four-year-old son was reportedly found hiding inside a room during the aftermath of the attack. After learning about her husband’s death, the woman allegedly fled the house with the child. Police are now working to trace her whereabouts. The victim’s mother, Bitola Devi, told police that her son married Veerangana in 2019. She said the woman was originally from Tindwari in Banda district and that the couple had frequent disputes after marriage. According to her, the arguments had intensified over the past few months. Bitola Devi also stated that on the day of the incident, her daughter-in-law had gone out in the morning to meet her sisters along with the child, while Pappu went to work. She alleged that Veerangana returned home in the evening in an intoxicated state, after which the argument between the couple began. Pappu’s brother, Santosh, said the family was shocked by the condition in which they found him. He claimed that despite their efforts to get medical help quickly, the accused woman resisted and created a scene, worsening the situation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Dinesh Tripathi, said the investigation so far indicates that the incident was not accidental. “The couple consumed alcohol together, and following an argument, the wife attacked her husband with the intention to kill,” he said, adding that all evidence points to a deliberate assault. Police said they are also examining whether the murder was planned or occurred in a fit of rage. As of now, the family has not submitted a formal written complaint, but officers said a case will be registered based on available evidence. The incident has raised serious concerns about domestic violence, substance abuse, and the safety of children in such households, as the investigation continues.
