West Bengal SIR 2026 Final Voter List Likely on February 28, Supplementary Rolls to Continue
Kolkata | 28 Feb 2026 The Election Commission of India is set to publish the final Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter list for West Bengal on Saturday, February 28. With the deadline approaching, security has been tightened across the state, and 240 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order ahead of the announcement of the final electoral roll. Amid concerns over pending verification cases, the Supreme Court of India stepped in to ensure that no eligible voter is left out. On February 24, the top court used its extraordinary powers under Article 142 and directed the poll body to continue publishing supplementary voter lists even after the final roll is notified on February 28, keeping the upcoming assembly elections in mind. The court observed that even if each judicial officer were to clear 250 cases daily, the process would still take around 80 days, which goes well beyond the February 28 deadline. To address this, the bench clarified that voters included in supplementary lists will be treated as part of the final electoral roll released on February 28, ensuring their voting rights remain protected. According to the court’s order, if verification is not fully completed by the deadline, the Election Commission may publish the final list followed by continuous supplementary lists as and when pending cases are resolved. The bench stated, “We deem it appropriate to invoke our power under Article 142 and declare that voters enlisted in the supplementary lists shall be considered to be a part of the final list published on February 28,” reinforcing the focus on inclusive and fair elections.
