TMC Begins Rebuilding After Bengal Poll Setback
Kolkata, May 16, 2026 The Trinamool Congress has begun a phase of internal rebuilding following its disappointing performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections, with party chief Mamata Banerjee urging leaders and workers to strengthen the organisation from the grassroots. The developments highlight the party’s attempt to regain stability amid growing internal dissatisfaction and political challenges after the electoral defeat. During a review meeting with defeated candidates and senior leaders, Mamata Banerjee stressed the need to revive booth-level structures, reconnect with local workers and rebuild party offices across districts. She also instructed leaders to submit detailed reports analysing the election results in their respective areas within a week. Emphasising discipline within the organisation, she said, “Those who want to leave are free to go; I will not stop anyone.” The meeting also reflected signs of unease within the party, with reports of some leaders expressing dissatisfaction over organisational decisions and a few defeated candidates remaining absent from the discussions. At the same time, the party announced that fact-finding teams would examine alleged irregularities reported from several constituencies during the elections. As the Trinamool Congress looks to recover from one of its most difficult electoral phases in recent years, the leadership appears focused on restructuring the organisation and rebuilding public confidence through renewed grassroots mobilisation and internal consolidation.
