The sugarcane is turning sweeter for the Uttar Pradesh farmers. The Yogi government has transformed the sugarcane sector in Uttar Pradesh with its commitment to pay every penny of the sugarcane farmers. Over 45.74 lakh sugarcane farmers in Uttar Pradesh have been paid a record cane price payment of more than Rs 1,40,000 crore between 2017-2021 which indicates the pro-farmer stance of the government.

Unlike the previous governments, the Yogi-led government has accorded priority to ensuring the payment of cane price to the state farmers. The payment that was made in 10 years (2007-2017) by the then BSP and SP governments, has been made by the current government in just 4 years.

The payment made by the BJP-led UP government is twice the amount that was made by the former Bahujan Samaj Party government and 1.5 times more than the Samajwadi Party government.

It is noteworthy that during Mayawati's tenure from 2007-2012, 30 lakh cane farmers were paid Rs 52,131 crore and during the Akhilesh regime from 2012-2017, a payment of Rs 95,215 crore was made to 33 lakh farmers.

Under the SP and BSP governments, sugarcane farmers had to run from pillar to post for payment of their dues. Troubled by the situation, many farmers were giving up on sugarcane production. But as soon as the Yogi Government came in power, it changed the fate of sugarcane farmers by making a record payment. There are more than 45.74 lakh sugarcane supplier farmers in the state and about 67 lakh farmers are associated with sugarcane cultivation.

The Yogi Adityanath government has also cleared arrears worth Rs 10,661 crore, pending since the Akhilesh government, to cane farmers.

For the first time in 25 years, licenses were issued for setting up 243 new Khandsari units. Out of which 133 units have been operationalized. With an investment of Rs 273 crore in these units, about 16,500 people will get employment opportunities. With the establishment of new Khandsari units, more than 50,000 people will get employment.

Sugar mills that got shut during the previous governments were revived by the Yogi Adityanath government and the state now ranks first in sugar production in the country. Under which new sugar mills were started in Pipraich-Munderwa. The capacity of the closed Ramala Sugar Mill was increased and was made operational. The closed sugar mills of Sambhal and Saharanpur are also operating now. Apart from this, the capacity of 11 private mills was also increased. Venus, Daya and Wave sugar mills were made operational again after being closed for about 8 years. Ethanol plants were set up in Sathianv and Najibabad cooperative mills.

The state government has crushed more than 3,868 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in UP with a record production of 427.30 lakh tonnes of sugar, including three previous crushing seasons and the current crushing season 2020-21.

In another record production, a total of 261.72 crore litres of ethanol has been produced in the state through 54 distilleries between 2017 and January 2021.

Today, 47 per cent of the sugar production in the country is being produced in Uttar Pradesh. The sugarcane sector contributes 8.45 per cent to the state's GDP and 20.18 per cent to the GDP of the agriculture sector.Even during the lockdown, not a single sugar mill was closed in the state.Production continued in all 119 sugar mills.
