New Delhi | October 8, 2025 The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has reached a major milestone in helping Indian households shift toward clean and affordable solar energy. As of September 2025, Public Sector Banks (PSBs) have sanctioned over 5.79 lakh loan applications amounting to ₹10,907 crore. This achievement reflects the government’s strong commitment to promoting self-sufficient and sustainable power for every home. The scheme, which aims to encourage rooftop solar installations, is being supported by PSBs through simplified and inclusive financing systems. Loans are being made easily available with no need for collateral, low interest rates, and flexible repayment periods that match the savings users make on electricity bills. This makes the program especially beneficial for middle and lower-income families. To make the process more efficient, all loan applications are handled digitally through the JanSamarth Portal, which is linked with the official PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in). This digital setup allows for faster approvals, easier tracking, and greater transparency. Applicants can apply online, get approvals, and monitor their application progress from start to finish without visiting a bank. Under the model loan structure, applicants can receive up to ₹2 lakh in loans without any collateral and enjoy a six-month moratorium period before repayment begins. The loan process relies on self-declaration, reducing paperwork and making the system more user-friendly. This approach ensures that more families can install rooftop solar panels without worrying about immediate financial burdens. In response to user feedback, several improvements have been made to make the scheme more accessible. These include allowing co-applicants to widen eligibility, removing previous restrictions based on solar panel capacity, and simplifying documentation requirements. Such changes have helped the program reach more households and communities. The Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) are jointly overseeing the progress of the scheme. Regular reviews are conducted with State Level Bankers’ Committees and Lead District Managers to ensure faster loan disbursements, broader coverage, and consistent monitoring of the initiative across the country. With more than five lakh households already benefitting, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is becoming a key part of India’s clean energy movement. It not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens rural and urban economies by lowering electricity expenses and encouraging the use of renewable energy. This initiative represents India’s growing determination to achieve energy self-reliance while empowering citizens through technology, accessibility, and green innovation.
