Ghaziabad Woman Killed While Collecting Rent, Body Found Stuffed in Bag at Tenant’s Flat; Couple Detained
Ghaziabad, December 18: A 32-year-old woman was found murdered inside her tenant’s flat in Ghaziabad after she went there to collect pending rent, police said on Thursday. Her body was discovered stuffed inside a bag late Wednesday night at a high-rise apartment complex in Raj Nagar Extension. A tenant couple living in the flat has been detained for questioning in connection with the case. According to the Ghaziabad police, the incident came to light around 11:15 pm on Wednesday after the woman failed to return home. The deceased, who worked as a school teacher, owned two flats in the Aura Chimera residential complex. She lived with her family in a first-floor flat in Tower M, while the fifth-floor flat in Tower L had been rented out to the suspect couple about eight months ago. Police officials said the woman had gone to the tenants’ flat on Wednesday evening to collect rent that had reportedly been pending for the last few months. When she did not return for several hours, her domestic help became worried. The helper went to the tenant’s flat to inquire about her whereabouts but found the responses of the tenants suspicious. She then alerted neighbours, following which the police were informed. A police team reached the spot and conducted a search of the fifth-floor flat. During questioning, the tenants allegedly gave evasive answers. On further inspection, the police found the woman’s body stuffed inside a red-coloured bag within the flat. Assistant Commissioner of Police Upasana Pandey, of the Nandgram circle, said the tenant couple has been detained and is being questioned. She added that a first information report will be registered after a formal complaint is received from the victim’s family. The detained tenants have been identified as Ajay Gupta, a transporter, and his wife Akriti Gupta, both aged between 30 and 35 years. Police said they are being questioned to establish the sequence of events and the motive behind the killing. Senior police officials said preliminary investigation suggests that the woman was strangled. A head injury was also found, which was allegedly caused by a pressure cooker. Dhawal Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police of the city zone, said the police have recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death. The DCP also clarified that rumours circulating on social media claiming that the body was cut into pieces are incorrect. “The body was found inside a bag, but there is no evidence to suggest dismemberment,” he said, urging people not to spread unverified information. Police officials said the victim had rented out the flat to the couple for a monthly rent of ₹18,000. Initial inquiries indicate that rent had not been paid for the past few months, which may have led to a dispute. However, officers said it is too early to draw conclusions, and all possible angles are being investigated. Neighbours told police that they had seen the woman entering the tenant’s flat on Wednesday evening. After that, there was no movement noticed until the police arrived later at night. The residential society remained tense as news of the murder spread, and additional police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain order. The woman’s family has been informed, and they are said to be in shock following the incident. Police said statements from family members, neighbours, and other witnesses are being recorded as part of the investigation. Officials said further action will be taken based on evidence collected from the crime scene, the post-mortem report, and the questioning of the detained couple. The police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway to ensure justice in the case.
