Indian Employee Wins £67,000 Compensation After UK Tribunal Finds Racial Abuse and Wrongful Dismissal at London KFC Outlet
London | December 28, 2025 An Indian man from Tamil Nadu has been awarded nearly £67,000 in compensation by a UK employment tribunal after it ruled that he was subjected to racial discrimination, harassment, and wrongful dismissal while working at a KFC outlet in London. The tribunal found that the abuse he faced at his workplace was linked directly to his race and that his complaints were not handled properly by the employer. The man, identified as Madhesh Ravichandran, began working at a KFC branch in West Wickham, London, in January 2023. According to tribunal records, he alleged that soon after joining the fast-food outlet, he faced discriminatory behaviour from his manager, Kajan Theiventhiram. Ravichandran told the court that he was forced to work extra hours and was treated unfairly compared to other staff members. Within two months of starting his job, Ravichandran said he was denied his annual leave without valid reason. During this period, he also overheard a conversation in which his manager allegedly referred to him as a “slave” while speaking to another employee. The manager was also said to have stated that he would prioritise staff members who were Sri Lankan Tamil, which further added to the claim of racial bias. Ravichandran said the comment deeply upset and humiliated him. He later raised the issue internally, expecting the company to investigate the matter. However, he alleged that no proper inquiry was conducted and that his concerns were not taken seriously. Feeling distressed and unsupported, he eventually resigned from his job months later. The case was heard by an employment tribunal, where Judge Paul Abbott examined the evidence presented by both sides. In his ruling, the judge stated that the refusal of Ravichandran’s leave request was “significantly influenced” by his race. The case has drawn attention to workplace racism and the importance of equal treatment for migrant workers. Madhesh Ravichandran, who is from Tamil Nadu, started working at a KFC outlet in West Wickham, London, in January 2023. According to tribunal findings, his experience at the fast-food chain turned distressing within a few months. He told the court that his manager forced him to work extra hours and treated him unfairly compared to other employees. Two months into the job, Ravichandran said he was denied his annual leave. Around the same time, he overheard his manager referring to him as a “slave” while speaking to another staff member. The manager also allegedly said that priority would be given to workers who were Sri Lankan Tamil. These remarks left Ravichandran feeling humiliated and targeted because of his race. Ravichandran raised the issue with the company, expecting an investigation. However, the tribunal heard that no proper inquiry was conducted into his complaint. Feeling stressed and unsupported, he later resigned from his job. The court ruled that this amounted to wrongful dismissal. The employment tribunal accepted Ravichandran’s evidence and stated that the denial of leave and extra workload were influenced by racial prejudice. He was awarded £66,800 in compensation. The judge also recommended that Nexus Foods Limited, which operates the KFC branch, should provide anti-discrimination training to all its employees. The ruling sends a strong message that racism at the workplace will not be tolerated.
