Kangana Ranaut Targets Thackerays After BJP’s Big Win in BMC Polls, Recalls 2020 House Demolition
Mumbai | January 17, 2026 Actor and BJP leader Kangana Ranaut has reacted strongly to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Celebrating the BJP’s rise as the single-largest party in Mumbai’s civic body, Ranaut took a sharp dig at the Shiv Sena leadership, referring to them as “women-haters, bullies, and nepotism mafia.” Her remarks brought back memories of the 2020 controversy when a part of her Bandra West bungalow was demolished by the BMC. Speaking to news channel, the Mandi MP said Maharashtra’s voters have given a clear answer to those who, according to her, harassed and targeted her in the past. “Those who abused me, demolished my house, called me names, threatened me to leave Maharashtra, today Maharashtra has quit them,” she said. Ranaut congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for what she called a decisive and historic mandate in Mumbai. The actor recalled that the BMC action against her Pali Hill bungalow took place in 2020 when the undivided Shiv Sena was in power. She had then moved the Bombay High Court, which ruled that the demolition was driven by malafide intent and violated her fundamental rights. Ranaut had earlier claimed that the action was taken as revenge for her criticism of the Mumbai Police. According to official data from the State Election Commission, the BJP won 89 seats in the BMC, securing over 11.79 lakh votes. With an overall vote share of more than 45 percent, the party emerged as the largest force in Mumbai’s civic body. Beyond the capital, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance also swept major municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Thane, Nashik and Navi Mumbai, marking a major political shift in the state’s urban landscape.
