Bengal Launches Massive Caste Certificate Review Drive
Kolkata, May 16, 2026 Amid growing political debate over the authenticity of caste documents, the West Bengal government has initiated a large-scale verification process for caste certificates issued since 2011. The move reflects the administration’s attempt to strengthen transparency in the welfare system and ensure that benefits meant for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes reach genuine beneficiaries. The verification exercise will cover nearly 1.69 crore caste certificates issued across the State, including those distributed through government outreach programmes. District authorities have been directed to closely examine the validity of the documents and identify any irregularities in the certification process. Officials have also been instructed to take legal action wherever forged or improperly issued certificates are detected. West Bengal Tribal Development and Backward Classes Welfare Minister Kshudiram Tudu alleged that fake caste certificates were issued on a large scale during the previous administration. He stated that several individuals allegedly secured government benefits through fraudulent documents and warned that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. The development has added fresh political momentum in the State, with the government presenting the exercise as a step towards accountability and institutional credibility. As the verification process moves forward, the administration says the focus will remain on restoring public trust while ensuring that welfare measures reach the communities they are intended to support.
