New Delhi, May 17, 2026 Rising instability in West Asia has once again brought global maritime security into focus, with India strongly voicing concern over attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The issue carries major international significance as the strategically important waterway is crucial for global trade and energy transportation. India’s statement at the United Nations highlighted the urgent need to protect civilian shipping routes and maintain stability in the region. India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Parvathaneni Harish, firmly stated that attacks on commercial ships and threats to crew members cannot be accepted under any circumstances. Addressing a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, he stressed the importance of respecting international maritime laws and ensuring uninterrupted freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The remarks came after an Indian-linked vessel was reportedly attacked near the coast of Oman earlier this month. All crew members onboard were rescued safely by Omani authorities, while investigations into the incident are still continuing. The growing number of attacks in the region has increased concerns over the safety of international shipping routes and the security of seafarers operating in conflict-prone waters. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most vital maritime passages, carrying a significant portion of global oil and energy supplies. With tensions continuing to affect international trade and regional stability, India has reiterated that the protection of commercial shipping and adherence to international law are essential for maintaining global economic balance and maritime security.
