PM Modi Pays Tribute to Former Qatar Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani
New Delhi, July 12,2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Qatar’s former Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, following his demise at the age of 74. Remembered for his role in shaping modern Qatar, Sheikh Hamad’s leadership oversaw a period of rapid development and strengthened the country’s position on the global stage. His passing has drawn condolences from leaders across the world. According to an announcement by the Amiri Diwan, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away on Sunday morning. In a post on X, PM Modi said, “We deeply mourn the passing of Father Amir of the State of Qatar, HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. A visionary leader who led Qatar to great levels of development and prosperity, we remember him also as a true friend whom I had the honour of meeting during my last visit to Qatar in February 2024. I convey my sincere condolences to the Amir of Qatar, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the entire royal family and people of Qatar. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace.” Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as the Amir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before voluntarily handing over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. During his 18-year tenure, Qatar witnessed significant economic, social and cultural progress, further strengthening its regional influence and international standing. PM Modi’s tribute reflects the respect Sheikh Hamad earned for his leadership and his contribution to strengthening ties with India.
