Bengal Cricketer Abishek Porel Arrested in Rape, Intimidation Case
Kolkata, August 11, 2026 The arrest of Bengal cricketer and Delhi Capitals player Abishek Porel has brought a serious criminal case involving allegations of rape, assault and criminal intimidation into the spotlight. Porel was arrested by police from Emami City under the Dum Dum police station in connection with a complaint filed by a medical student, Hooghly Rural police SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh said. The woman had filed a police complaint in June, alleging that she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three years. According to her complaint, differences developed between them last year, following which she alleged that Porel began “distancing” himself from her. She further claimed that he had promised to marry her but was now unwilling to do so. The woman also alleged that Porel had sexual intercourse with her on the promise of marriage and accused him of assault and criminal intimidation. “We have received a complaint and started an investigation,” a police official told. The matter subsequently came before the Calcutta High Court, which directed the police to arrest Porel in connection with the case. Porel, who has previously travelled with the India A team to the UK and Australia, had denied the allegations in the past. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the complaint and determine the facts of the case. A left-handed top-order batter, Porel has represented Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League since 2023. He scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise last season. Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal in the 2021-22 season and has gone on to play 32 first-class and 23 List A matches. His arrest marks a major development in the case, with the legal proceedings and police investigation now set to determine the next course of action.
