Bishkek Breakthrough: Modi and Pashinyan Chart a Bigger India-Armenia Partnership

New Delhi, August 31, 2026 India’s diplomatic outreach gathered pace in Bishkek as Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. The meeting reflected a shared push to widen India-Armenia cooperation, with both leaders discussing stronger engagement across strategic, economic and people-centric sectors. The two leaders reviewed ways to take bilateral ties forward and also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the situation in West Asia. Their discussions covered defence, economic cooperation, pharmaceuticals, science and technology, culture and education. “PM Narendra Modi reiterated that India looked forward to working closely with Armenia to further deepen and expand bilateral ties,” Jaiswal said. PM Modi later shared details of the meeting on X, saying, “A wonderful meeting with Prime Minister of Armenia, Mr. Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek. India-Armenia cooperation is all set to grow in defence, IT, space, education, pharmaceuticals and more. We are equally certain to deepen trade and investment linkages in the times to come,” he said. The Prime Minister is in Kyrgyzstan at the invitation of President Sadyr Zhaparov for the 26th SCO Summit, where member countries, observers and partners are discussing major regional and international matters. After reaching Bishkek on Sunday, PM Modi was received by Adylbek Kasymaliev, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic. On Monday, he paid floral tribute at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial and recalled Gandhi’s enduring message of peace, non-violence and harmony. PM Modi also interacted with members of the Indian community and people associated with India, including environmentalists, yoga practitioners, academics, ITEC alumni and researchers. He appreciated their contribution to strengthening India-Kyrgyzstan friendship and highlighted continued exchanges in yoga, education and culture. One yoga practitioner who met the Prime Minister had represented Kyrgyzstan at the World Yogasana Championship in Ahmedabad and won a medal. As more bilateral meetings are expected during the summit, the Bishkek visit continues to underline India’s effort to build stronger partnerships and deepen its regional engagement.
