Xi Departs Delhi After Modi Meeting on Bilateral Ties

New Delhi, September 13, 2026 Chinese President Xi Jinping left New Delhi on Sunday after concluding his two-day visit for the BRICS Summit, with his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi emerging as the key bilateral engagement during his stay. The talks focused on the future direction of India-China relations and efforts to address the boundary issue through continued dialogue. Xi attended the BRICS sessions at Bharat Mandapam before meeting Modi for his only bilateral engagement during the visit. The two leaders discussed the long-term development of bilateral ties and the boundary question. Xi said India and China should view their relations from a strategic perspective and focus on their long-term development. Highlighting the broader relationship, Xi noted that despite differences, the two countries have been able to “support and help each other to achieve common development.” He also pointed out that the two leaders had met more than 20 times during this period, resulting in “a series of important consensuses”. According to Xinhua, Xi said China and India are partners, not rivals, and that the two countries present opportunities for each other's development rather than threats. Modi thanked China for its support and cooperation during India's BRICS chairship and said the two sides now had an opportunity to further discuss bilateral cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the India-China boundary question and agreed that bilateral ties should be viewed from a strategic and long-term perspective. The leaders also welcomed the progress made in India-China relations since their previous meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Modi stressed that “differences should not become disputes” and that both sides should be guided by “mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.” The discussions signal an effort by both countries to sustain engagement and build greater stability in their relationship while continuing to address outstanding differences.
