Supreme Court Seeks Mediation in Sridevi Property Dispute

New Delhi, September 18, 2026 The Supreme Court has issued notices to producer Boney Kapoor and his daughters, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, in connection with a long-standing dispute over a 2.70-acre property in Chennai purchased by late actress Sridevi and her family. The plea seeking to reopen the matter has been filed by siblings M.C. Sivakami and M.C. Natarajan, who have claimed a share in the disputed land. A bench comprising Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Arun Pillai heard the petition and directed both sides to maintain the status quo regarding the property until the next hearing. The court also suggested that the dispute be taken up for mediation and proposed that a retired High Court judge supervise the process. The case will be heard again on December 18, when the Supreme Court will review the progress of the mediation. The siblings moved the apex court after the Madras High Court, on April 20, allowed the Kapoor family’s revision petition and dismissed the civil suit filed by Sivakami and Natarajan. The Madras High Court had held that the challenge to property transactions dating back to 1988 was barred by limitation. It also observed that the claims made by the plaintiffs did not have sufficient legal basis based on the submissions placed before it. According to the High Court records, Sivakami and Natarajan claimed to be the legal heirs of late M.C. Chandrasekaran and sought division of the property into five equal shares, asserting a one-fifth share for themselves. With the Supreme Court now directing status quo and encouraging mediation, the decades-old property dispute remains under judicial consideration.
