July 18, 2025 | Mumbai Mumbai commuters are facing severe disruptions as app-based cab services like Uber, Ola, and Rapido continue to be affected by an ongoing drivers’ strike. The protest, now in its third consecutive day, stems from long-standing grievances over low pay, unfair platform policies, and the lack of government regulation. Thousands of passengers across the city have reported longer wait times, frequent cancellations, and surge pricing. Drivers say the core issue is that aggregator platforms are not following fare rates approved by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). Instead, companies offer rides at discounted rates, deducting the difference from driver payouts. Striking drivers demand that such discount costs be borne by the companies, not taken from their earnings. “Every day we’re working more and earning less. The platforms decide the fares, and we’re left with scraps,” said Ramesh K., a protesting driver from Andheri. Another key demand is that during surge pricing, the increased fare should go to the company, and the drivers’ share should remain consistent with RTA guidelines. Drivers operating air-conditioned SUVs (Cool Cabs) also demand separate fare slabs that reflect their higher fuel and maintenance costs. Suspension of driver IDs without explanation or warning has also become a major flashpoint. Drivers allege that accounts are being blocked due to unverifiable complaints, leaving them jobless overnight. They’re now calling for a transparent review system and the reinstatement of suspended IDs. In addition, drivers are pushing for broader reforms: a freeze on new ride permits to prevent oversaturation, and inclusion under the Auto Rickshaw and Taxi Welfare Board to access legal and financial support. Despite these demands, Maharashtra's long-promised policy to regulate ride aggregators remains pending. While transport officials claim the policy draft, covering fare regulation, licensing, and enforcement is ready, it awaits final approval. This delay has created a regulatory vacuum, allowing aggregator platforms to operate with little oversight. Meanwhile, services like Uber Shuttle, Rapido bike taxis, and CityFlo buses have been flagged as unauthorized and asked to halt operations, further complicating Mumbai's urban mobility. Dr. Keshav Kshirsagar, president of the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, criticized the government for inaction. “Drivers are not being heard. This isn’t just about pay, it's about basic dignity and rights. If this continues, the city’s transport chaos will only get worse,” he said. As the strike stretches on with no resolution in sight, both drivers and passengers remain in limbo. One side is fighting for fair treatment; the other is just trying to get to work. Mumbai Cab Chaos! Uber, Ola, and Rapido drivers are on strike, demanding fair pay, transparent policies & proper regulation. As wait times grow and fares surge, commuters are stuck, and drivers say enough is enough.
