Maharashtra Doctor’s Suicide Sparks Allegations of Rape and Workplace Harassment
Satara, Oct 24, 2025: The tragic death of a 28-year-old woman doctor in Satara district, Maharashtra, has triggered a wave of serious allegations, including rape and harassment. The doctor, who was employed at a government hospital, was found dead in a hotel room late Thursday night in what police say was an apparent suicide. On her palm, she had left a note accusing two police officers of sexual assault and mental harassment over a period of five months. Relatives revealed that the young doctor had confided in them about the pressure she faced at work. Her aunt said, “She was bright and ambitious. We supported her education and dreams since childhood. She had been under immense pressure at work, and that is why she took this extreme step. The culprits must be punished.” Another relative added that just two days before her death, the doctor had spoken about harassment from her seniors. In the note, the doctor accused sub-inspector Gopal Badane of repeatedly raping and sexually harassing her. She also named another officer, Prashant Bankar, alleging mental harassment. Following the revelations, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally instructed the Satara Police to suspend the officers mentioned in the note immediately. Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered against Badane and Bankar under charges of rape and abetment of suicide. Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi stated that both officers have been suspended, and police teams are actively trying to locate them. “A thorough probe and stringent action will be taken,” Doshi told reporters. Adding to the complexity of the case, relatives said the doctor and other medical officials had faced pressure to alter postmortem reports. Her cousin told ANI, “There was significant police and political pressure on her to manipulate postmortem findings. She tried to report it. My sister should get justice.” The Maharashtra Women’s Commission has taken cognizance of the case, with chief Rupali Chakankar urging strict action against the accused. The incident has ignited outrage across the state, with many questioning the treatment of women professionals in government institutions and the role of law enforcement in safeguarding victims. Students and colleagues of the doctor have also protested the incident, highlighting issues of sexual harassment, workplace pressure, and the urgent need for reforms in hospital administration and policing. Authorities have assured a transparent investigation into both the circumstances of her death and the allegations made in the note. As the probe continues, the case has drawn attention to broader concerns over harassment in the workplace and the challenges faced by women reporting misconduct.
