Washington DC | November 7, 2025 Former US President Donald Trump has said he may visit India next year and called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “good friend.” He also praised the strong bond between India and the United States. Speaking to reporters at the White House after announcing a new plan to reduce the prices of weight loss medicines, Trump said his talks with PM Modi were going well. He added that the two leaders have a warm personal relationship. Trump said, “He (PM Modi) has mostly stopped buying from Russia. He’s my friend, and we talk often. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a great man. He wants me to visit India, and we’ll plan it. I will go.” When asked if the visit might happen next year, Trump replied, “It could be, yes.” His comments came as both countries continue trade talks after the US recently placed a 50 percent tariff, including an extra 25 percent duty, related to India’s purchase of Russian oil. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump feels very positive about the India-US relationship. She added that the two leaders recently spoke when Trump celebrated Diwali in the Oval Office with Indian-American officials. During his recent Asia tour, Trump praised India for being “very good” on the issue of Russian oil, saying PM Modi had assured him India would reduce or stop importing crude from Moscow. India’s Ministry of External Affairs, however, made it clear that the country’s energy decisions depend on its national interest and people’s welfare. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “India is a big importer of oil and gas. Our goal is to protect Indian consumers in a changing global market. Our policies are guided by that.” If the visit happens, it would be Trump’s first trip to India since 2020, when he attended the grand “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad during his presidency. The news of a possible visit has created excitement in both nations, as many believe it could strengthen trade and diplomatic ties further. Trump’s remarks show the continuing friendly relationship between him and PM Modi. As both sides discuss energy, trade, and global cooperation, the possible visit could mark a new phase of closer ties between Washington and New Delhi.
