India Reaffirms Commitment to Afghanistan at UN

New Delhi, June 9, 2026 India has once again underlined its unwavering support for the people of Afghanistan, emphasizing humanitarian assistance and development cooperation amid ongoing challenges in the country. Addressing the United Nations Security Council, India reiterated its long-standing ties with Afghanistan and highlighted its continued efforts to contribute to the welfare and stability of the Afghan people. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, stated, “India and Afghanistan are contiguous neighbours and civilizational states.” He noted that India’s humanitarian and developmental support spans all 34 provinces of Afghanistan through more than 500 projects focused on healthcare, infrastructure, capacity building, and community welfare. India has also been working closely with UN agencies and humanitarian organizations to ensure aid reaches those who need it most. The envoy stressed that cooperation with Afghan authorities has helped improve the delivery of assistance to intended beneficiaries. He also highlighted the importance of adopting policies that prioritize the interests of ordinary Afghans while supporting long-term peace, stability, and economic recovery in the country. Reaffirming its people-centric approach, India called for constructive international engagement with Afghanistan and emphasized that global efforts should focus on improving the lives of Afghan citizens. The statement reflects India’s continued commitment to standing with the Afghan people during a critical period of transition and rebuilding.
