PM Modi Announces Relief After Sikkim Tunnel Tragedy

New Delhi, July 21, 2026 The tunnel collapse in Sikkim's Namchi district has drawn national attention, with the Centre extending support to the affected families. Expressing grief over the loss of lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims and those injured in the incident. According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the next of kin of each person who lost their life in the accident will receive an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF, while every injured person will be provided financial assistance of ₹50,000. In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply saddened by the loss of lives caused by the collapse of the under-construction tunnel in Namchi, Sikkim. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, wished the injured a speedy recovery, and stated that the next of kin of each deceased would receive ₹2 lakh while every injured person would receive ₹50,000 from the PMNRF. Meanwhile, rescue and relief teams were deployed immediately after the tunnel collapse to assist those affected and carry out evacuation efforts. The administration continues to monitor the situation closely while ensuring that all possible support is being provided to the affected families, as relief operations remain underway.
