20 Killed, Over 50 Injured as Protests Against PoK Elections Turn Deadly

New Delhi, July 28, 2026 Fresh violence has been reported in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as protests against the ongoing legislative elections intensified. According to reports, at least 20 people have been killed and more than 50 others injured within the past 24 hours after Pakistani security forces allegedly cracked down on demonstrators calling for an election boycott. The violence was reported from Rawalakot's Dreik Eighth area, where protesters were targeted during the demonstrations. Sources claimed that those killed included Usman Nazir, the brother of Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) core committee member and spokesperson Umar Nazir Kashmiri. Reports further stated that around 80 people have allegedly lost their lives since protests in PoK began on June 5. Videos circulating from the region reportedly show the bodies of protesters lying on roads after security personnel opened fire on crowds. "Friends, the situation has become dire. Rawalakot is filled with dead bodies and the wounded. For God's sake, stand with us right now; please, stand with us," said Aqeel Bhai, a social media influencer from PoK, in a video message. "I have just barely escaped with my life. I no longer care about my own survival. After seeing so many brothers martyred. I have come here to plead with you with folded hands. Please have some conscience; to all the international media watching, please support us. We are peaceful people. Countless dead bodies, countless wounded. Our shoulders are exhausted from carrying the bodies," he added. Reports alleged that Pakistani security forces have mainly targeted members of the Awami Action Committee (AAC), which has been leading the boycott campaign against the elections. More than 14,000 security personnel have reportedly been deployed across PoK, with claims of snipers, live ammunition, and long-range tear gas being used to disperse protesters. Internet, mobile connectivity, electricity, and water supply have also reportedly been disrupted in several areas. Meanwhile, polling for the 45 directly contested seats in the 53-member legislative assembly is being conducted in three phases, with the remaining rounds scheduled for August 2 and August 10.
