Russian Drone Strike Near Kyiv Kills 27, Triggers Explosions

New Delhi, August 29, 2026 A Russian drone strike on a warehouse in Myla, on the western outskirts of Kyiv, triggered a massive fire and a series of explosions overnight, leaving at least 27 people dead. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise, while the incident has also prompted scrutiny over the storage of potentially explosive materials at the facility. According to Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office, an unmanned aerial vehicle fell on or struck the grounds of an enterprise in Myla at around 8:10 pm on August 28. A major fire broke out before detonations began. Prosecutors said the warehouse appeared to contain “explosive objects” and launched an investigation into whether the materials were being stored legally and whether the company had the “necessary permits and approvals”. Kyiv region governor Tymur Tkachenko said, “Unfortunately, as things stand, 27 people are known to have died. And this figure may not be final.” He added that Taras Didych, mayor of the village of Dmytrivska, was among those killed. Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky also criticised the failure to learn from a deadly July incident at a munitions depot near Kyiv, saying, “In the fifth year of the full-scale invasion, making the same mistakes over and over is criminal negligence,” and, “Everyone responsible, without exception, must face severe punishment so that such situations never happen again.” The latest tragedy comes as Russia and Ukraine continue to intensify long-range attacks against each other, with civilian casualties and fires increasing in recent months. The investigation will now examine both the circumstances of the strike and the safety and legal compliance of the facility, while Ukrainian authorities have called for accountability over any negligence that may have contributed to the loss of life.
