Two Para SF Soldiers Missing After Yamuna Boat Capsize

New Delhi, September 02, 2026 A major search and rescue operation is underway in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district after two soldiers from the 1 Para Special Forces (SF) went missing in the Yamuna river during a night training exercise. Multiple agencies have been mobilised as efforts continue to trace the two personnel swept away by powerful currents. The incident took place on Tuesday night when five soldiers were participating in a training exercise near the Hathnikund Barrage. Their Army boat reportedly developed a technical snag and was carried by strong currents towards the downstream barrage. Despite swift efforts to retrieve the boat, it encountered dangerous conditions near the sluice gates. According to the Chandigarh-based Defence PRO, “The teams made swift efforts to retrieve the boat. However, the boat got struck in strong eddies around the sluice gates and capsized resulting in the crew getting swept away by the strong currents. Two members of the crew are presently missing,” the spokesperson said. Three of the five soldiers managed to swim to safety, while the other two were swept downstream by the strong water currents. The Indian Army, Indian Air Force, NDRF, SDRF teams from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, local police and the civil administration are jointly carrying out the search. Two helicopters are also conducting aerial surveys over the barrage and along the Western Yamuna Canal towards Haryana and the Eastern Jamuna Canal towards Uttar Pradesh. To support the rescue operation, the Haryana Irrigation and Water Resources Department reduced water discharge at the Hathnikund Barrage and the Western Yamuna Canal following a request from the Army. Pratap Nagar police station SHO Inspector Rohtash confirmed that the multi-agency operation is continuing, but the two missing soldiers have not yet been traced. With all available resources deployed on the ground and in the air, authorities continue their efforts to locate the missing personnel.
