Delhi Airport Flooded After Heavy Rain, Passengers Wade Through Water

New Delhi, September 04, 2026 Heavy rain brought parts of Delhi to a standstill on Janmashtami, with severe waterlogging reported across the city. One of the most striking scenes emerged at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where rainwater accumulated near the arrival gates, forcing passengers to wait and make their way through the flooded area. "I've never seen anything like this; there is so much water. I've been standing here for about half an hour now. I am waiting for the water level to recede a bit so I can head towards the arrival gates," Mansi, a passenger, told Visuals from the airport showed travellers rolling up their trousers and pushing luggage trolleys through the water to reach the entry gates. "There is a massive amount of water. I have been standing here for about half an hour and am waiting for the water level to go down so that I can make my way towards the arrival gates," Himanshi, a passenger, said. Another passenger said, "It happened once about two years ago, and now I am seeing it happen again this year. The rain is a little heavier this year. Since it is Janmashtami today, there are also puja celebrations," The downpour also caused waterlogging in several other parts of Delhi. IMD data showed that Palam received 3.4 mm of rainfall between 11.30 am and 2.30 pm, while Najafgarh recorded 0.5 mm between 8.30 am and 11.30 am. The IMD issued a Yellow Alert, cautioning residents about possible waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, along with potential traffic disruptions and delays in public transport. Commuters were advised to check traffic updates and avoid areas near electrical wires and power lines during thunderstorms. The weather department forecast further spells of rain, thunderstorms and lightning, with isolated places likely to receive heavy rainfall. It also warned of heavy rain ranging from 50-100 mm at a few locations, accompanied by strong winds of 40-50 kmph and gusts reaching up to 60 kmph. With more rain expected, the flooding at Delhi Airport has once again highlighted how intense downpours can quickly disrupt travel and normal movement across the national capital.
