Satya Niketan Building Collapse: 6 Dead, Rescue Ops Continue

New Delhi, September 07, 2026 At least six people have died after a five-storey building being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, triggering a major rescue operation. The building came down at around 1:30 pm on Sunday while repair work was reportedly underway in the basement, raising concerns over the safety of construction and repair activities at PG accommodations in the capital. The building, located near Delhi University’s South Campus and opposite Sri Venkateswara College, had a basement and five upper floors. Rescue teams from the NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and other agencies worked through the night to clear the rubble. Eleven people were rescued and taken to hospital, with several reportedly in critical condition. Delhi Police personnel and a dog squad continued search operations at the site for the second consecutive day on Monday. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the building owner as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including the repair work being carried out at the premises. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also ordered the immediate sealing of illegal constructions exceeding four floors following the incident. The collapse sparked a protest by around 150–200 ABVP students at the Delhi Civic Centre on Sunday. The protesters entered through Gate No. 5 and staged a dharna outside the main building. The ABVP demanded the resignation of the MCD commissioner, alleging negligence and lapses in ensuring safety compliance at PG accommodations in student-dominated areas. The student body also called for an impartial probe and safety audits of all PG buildings in Delhi. Around 15 students were detained following a scuffle with police. With six people dead and rescue efforts continuing, the tragedy has put the spotlight on structural safety and regulatory compliance at PG accommodations in Delhi. The magisterial inquiry and police investigation will now determine the circumstances that led to the collapse and whether violations or the ongoing repair work contributed to the disaster.
