New Delhi, 07 September 2026 A Malaysia Airlines aircraft flying from Kuala Lumpur to Jeddah was diverted to Chennai on Monday evening following a failure involving its No. 2 engine. The aircraft landed without incident, and all 186 people aboard were reported safe. Flight MH156, operated by an Airbus A330-200 bearing registration 9M-MTY, was carrying 186 people when Chennai airport declared a full emergency at 4:07 pm IST. The aircraft had been scheduled to reach the airport at 4:40 pm but touched down at 4:44 pm. It was subsequently moved to Bay 45, while the airport’s emergency arrangements were put into operation. Chennai airport said in an official statement that the flight had been diverted after Engine No. 2 failed. A senior Chennai airport official told, “It was a smooth landing. All passengers are safe.” Following the landing, Malaysia Airlines and the concerned technical teams began examining the aircraft and investigating the reported technical problem. No injuries have been reported among the 186 people on the flight. Authorities and airline officials are expected to provide further information about the engine malfunction and the arrangements for passengers to resume their journey to Jeddah. For now, the aircraft remains under technical assessment following the safe emergency landing in Chennai.
