Himalayan Glaciers Melt 65% Faster, Black Carbon Blamed
New Delhi, September 15, 2026 Himalayan glaciers are losing mass 65% faster than they were a decade ago, raising fresh concerns over climate risks, water security and disasters in the region. A new study by Systemiq, in collaboration with the Integrated Mountain Initiative and with contributions from ICIMOD and the GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment, has warned that the Hindu Kush Himalayas could lose up to 80% of their present glacier volume by 2100 if current trends continue. Black carbon has emerged as a major contributor to the accelerating melt, with the study estimating that it drives roughly one-third of Himalayan glacier loss. Much of this pollution comes from sources such as brick kilns in the plains before settling on glaciers and speeding up melting. The report said this is among the few factors that India and the region can directly act on, unlike global warming, which requires broader international action. The report also pointed to a major monitoring gap across the Himalayas. Of nearly 40,000 estimated glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, only around 21 are currently being monitored, including about 16–17 in India. It warned that better monitoring, early-warning systems and risk mapping are urgently needed as glaciers, permafrost and high-mountain slopes become increasingly unstable. Most Himalayan river basins are expected to reach “peak water” around mid-century, when glacier meltwater reaches its maximum before declining as ice reserves shrink. The report recommended measures including cutting soot emissions, protecting fire-prone forests, restoring drying Himalayan springs, managing tourism according to carrying capacity and ensuring hazard assessments are considered before development approvals. Pema Gyamtsho, director general at ICIMOD, said the the Hindu Kush Himalayan region is changing rapidly, with glaciers retreating, and permafrost and high-mountain slopes are becoming increasingly unstable. “Communities and infrastructure downstream face growing risks from complex and cascading hazards. This report makes a strong case for coordinated action, including bringing the private sector behind resilient action. Cross-border monitoring, shared risk information and early-warning systems, and joint investment in resilience are all becoming essential for safeguarding lives, livelihoods and economies across the region.” The findings underline the need for immediate action to protect the Himalayan environment and the millions who depend on it.
