New Delhi, October 26, 2026 The 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum began in New Delhi on Monday, bringing together parliamentary leaders from member and partner countries to strengthen cooperation and discuss people-centric development. The two-day event is being held at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in the Parliament House complex, with a focus on dialogue, mutual understanding and shared democratic values. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired the inaugural session and welcomed the visiting delegations. Emphasising the importance of parliamentary engagement, he said, “On this occasion, the presence of parliamentary delegations from BRICS member nations in India, coming to the world’s largest democratic nation and sharing a joint commitment, will in itself be a special experience.” He added, “The presence of the BRICS Parliamentary Cooperation in India demonstrates our shared commitment to dialogue, mutual respect, and our shared trust in democratic values.” Birla noted that the BRICS Parliamentary Forum is marking its 20th anniversary this year, with its influence on global developments and international relations continuing to grow. He highlighted that BRICS nations represent nearly half of the world's population, cover approximately one-third of its landmass and hold a significant share of the global economy and international trade. Despite their geographical, cultural, linguistic and social differences, he said, “BRICS countries may differ geographically, culturally, linguistically, and socially, but our shared responsibility toward democratic values and humanity binds us together,” Referring to the recent BRICS Summit held in New Delhi under India's chairmanship, Birla described the unanimous adoption of the Joint Statement as a major achievement. Crediting the collective commitment of member nations under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, he expressed gratitude to all participating countries for reaching a common understanding on key issues. The forum is being held on October 26 and 27, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also scheduled to attend and meet the leaders of visiting delegations. Parliamentary representatives, Union Ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of State Legislatures, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries are participating in the event. The gathering seeks to strengthen parliamentary partnerships and encourage collective efforts towards democratic cooperation and people-centric development.
