New Delhi | October 8, 2025 India has officially stepped into the Hydrogen Age, according to Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Announcing the milestone on Wednesday, the minister said India aims to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030 — nearly 10 per cent of the global market. Puri stated that the price of green hydrogen, currently around $3.5 per kilogram, is expected to fall below $3 soon. He added that affordable green hydrogen would allow India to expand its use on a large scale, helping reduce dependence on imported fuels. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Bharat is creating a trusted hydrogen hub — one that fuels growth, supports exports, and builds a cleaner future,” he said. Government data suggests that if green hydrogen prices drop to $2.5 per kilogram, India could save nearly $150 billion in energy imports. At present, about 1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity is planned, beginning with 42,000 tonnes per annum through tenders. This will later increase to 170,000 tonnes per annum as part of the expansion phase. To support this initiative, 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles and nine refuelling stations will be introduced in the pilot stage. Nineteen companies have already been awarded a combined capacity of around 9 lakh tonnes per annum for green hydrogen production, showing strong participation from the private sector. The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with a total budget of Rs 19,744 crore up to FY 2029-30, plays a central role in this transformation. The mission aims to make India self-reliant through clean energy while helping decarbonise the economy and reduce fossil fuel dependency. It also aims to position India as a global leader in green hydrogen production and technology. In line with this mission, NTPC — the public sector power company — is setting up a major Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project, developed by NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), involves an investment of Rs 1.85 lakh crore. The Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub will have 20 GW of renewable energy capacity, making it one of India’s largest integrated green hydrogen facilities. It will produce around 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen and 7,500 tonnes of green hydrogen derivatives per day. This initiative marks a turning point in India’s clean energy journey, reflecting the country’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and global leadership in the hydrogen economy. India Steps Into the Hydrogen Future India has officially entered the Hydrogen Age, announced Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. With a goal to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, India aims to hold 10 percent of the global share. The government expects prices to fall below $3 per kg, making clean energy more accessible and reducing fuel imports. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, projects like NTPC’s Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh are driving this shift. The initiative promises cleaner energy, economic growth, and a major step toward India’s sustainable future.
