Chennai, October 9, 2025 The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several parts of Tamil Nadu, advising fishermen to remain ashore as two low-pressure systems are set to intensify over the southern region. Widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are expected to affect both coastal and interior districts over the next 24 hours. According to the latest IMD bulletin, one low-pressure system has formed over the southern peninsular region, while another is active over the Kanyakumari Sea. These systems are drawing in significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, leading to increased cloud formation and rainfall activity across the state. Parts of Chennai and its adjoining districts are expected to witness light to moderate showers throughout Thursday, accompanied by occasional thunderstorms. The city’s skies are likely to remain partly cloudy, with daytime temperatures ranging between 26°C and 35°C. Meteorologists cautioned that the unstable weather pattern could continue into the weekend, with intermittent rainfall in several urban and rural areas. Heavy rain is particularly forecast in districts such as Coimbatore (especially in hilly areas), Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur. The IMD warned that ghat regions and elevated terrains are more vulnerable to intense showers and potential landslides. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected at isolated places, prompting authorities to remain on alert. Weather experts explained that the twin low-pressure systems are enhancing moisture convergence over southern India, strengthening wind circulation and creating favorable conditions for heavy rainfall. “Moisture-laden winds from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea are meeting over Tamil Nadu, resulting in widespread rainfall,” a senior IMD official stated. The department also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea, citing the likelihood of strong surface winds reaching speeds of up to 55 kmph along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kanyakumari Sea. Those currently at sea have been advised to return to the shore immediately for safety. Coastal residents have also been asked to remain vigilant to possible high tides and rough sea conditions. Despite the forecast of heavy rain in several districts, the IMD noted that rainfall intensity may gradually decrease from Thursday evening. However, isolated heavy spells are expected to persist over the Nilgiris, the Western Ghats, and some interior districts for another 24 hours. Local authorities have been instructed to monitor vulnerable areas, ensure proper drainage, and prepare for potential disruptions in transportation or power supply due to the weather conditions. The IMD’s warning comes as Tamil Nadu continues to experience the transition into the northeast monsoon season, which typically brings significant rainfall between October and December. Residents have been urged to follow weather advisories closely and take necessary precautions as the state braces for another round of widespread rainfall and unstable weather. Heavy Rain Alert Across Tamil Nadu, Fishermen Urged to Stay Ashore The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu due to two active low-pressure systems over the southern peninsula and Kanyakumari Sea. Chennai and nearby regions are likely to see light to moderate rain with thunderstorms, while districts like Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Vellore may face intense showers. Fishermen have been advised to avoid the sea as winds could reach up to 55 kmph along the coast and Gulf of Mannar. Rain intensity is expected to ease gradually, though isolated heavy spells may continue over hilly areas for another day.
