A first-year B.Tech student at Delhi’s South Asian University (SAU) has alleged that she was sexually assaulted and subjected to an attempted gang rape by four men on the university campus. The student reported that the incident occurred in an area under construction, where the accused tore her clothes, touched her inappropriately, and attempted to commit rape. She filed a complaint with the police detailing the assault. Police said they received a PCR call regarding the incident on Monday around 3 pm and immediately dispatched a team to the campus. Initially, a case of molestation was registered. After recording the student’s detailed statement, authorities added sections related to attempted gang rape. The police are reviewing CCTV footage from areas mentioned by the student. Sources confirmed that cameras are installed at nearly every location on the campus, and the investigation is ongoing. Officers are examining the construction site and nearby areas to gather additional evidence and identify the suspects. Meanwhile, students at the international university protested on Monday against the alleged assault, creating a tense atmosphere on campus. The administration has not released a formal statement yet but confirmed that it is fully cooperating with the police investigation. South Asian University was established through an agreement between South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries and provides education to students from all eight member countries. The institution falls under the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and officials say ensuring the safety of students remains a priority. This incident comes shortly after another sexual assault case in Delhi, where an 18-year-old MBBS student from Haryana alleged she was raped at a hotel in the Adarsh Nagar area. Authorities have emphasized the importance of heightened vigilance and stricter safety measures across educational institutions following these incidents. University students, faculty, and local authorities are urging immediate steps to improve campus security, including more active patrolling, better lighting, and monitoring of under-construction areas. The administration is reportedly reviewing existing safety protocols and may introduce additional measures to prevent similar incidents. Police officials are investigating the four suspects and have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The university community continues to await updates from authorities as the investigation proceeds, hoping for swift action to ensure justice for the student and restore confidence in campus safety. Authorities have assured that the investigation will be thorough, and the suspects will be held accountable if found guilty. Meanwhile, students and parents are calling for continued awareness and preventive steps to ensure that campuses remain safe spaces for all learners. The case highlights ongoing concerns about student safety and the urgent need for effective measures across universities in the city.
