Amaravati, Jan 7: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has achieved a major milestone by setting two Guinness World Records during the construction of the Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Expressway in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant moment for India’s highway infrastructure sector. The achievement was announced on Wednesday by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who called it a proud occasion for the state and the country. The records were created during a continuous 24-hour construction effort on the Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Economic Corridor, also known as NH-544G. According to the Chief Minister, NHAI, in collaboration with construction firm M/s Rajpath Infracon Pvt. Ltd., successfully laid 28.95 lane-kilometres of bituminous concrete and used 10,675 metric tonnes of material within a single day. Both feats were officially recognised by Guinness World Records, making them among the fastest and largest continuous road-laying achievements of their kind. Naidu said the accomplishment reflected the Government of India’s focus on modern infrastructure and the strong push for high-quality highways under Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He also praised the engineers, workers, and on-ground teams for their dedication, noting that the work was carried out while strictly following NHAI’s quality and safety standards. The Chief Minister added that the momentum would continue, with two more Guinness World Records expected to be attempted by January 11, 2026, on Packages 2 and 3 of the same expressway project. Calling the corridor a landmark development, he said Andhra Pradesh was playing a key role in delivering world-class infrastructure at record speed. The Bengaluru–Kadapa–Vijayawada Expressway is a greenfield national highway project that has recently gathered pace and is expected to greatly improve connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Once completed, the six-lane, access-controlled expressway will reduce travel time between Amaravati, the capital of Andhra Pradesh, and Bengaluru from the current 11 to 12 hours to about six hours, offering faster and smoother travel for commuters. The expressway will pass through several districts in Andhra Pradesh, including Guntur, Prakasam, Kurnool, and Kadapa, before entering Karnataka. Designed to bypass crowded towns and existing highways, the corridor aims to ensure uninterrupted movement of passenger vehicles as well as freight traffic, which is expected to boost trade and economic activity in the region. The project is being developed under Bharatmala Phase-II, one of India’s flagship highway development programmes. It includes a mix of greenfield and brownfield sections to make use of existing road infrastructure while creating new, modern stretches where required. The total length of the expressway is estimated to be between 518 and 624 kilometres, with a projected cost ranging from Rs 19,200 crore to Rs 19,320 crore. The greenfield portion covers around 342 kilometres from Kodikonda to Addanki or Muppavaram, while the brownfield sections include the Bengaluru–Kodikonda stretch of 73 kilometres on NH-44 and the Addanki–Vijayawada stretch of 113 kilometres on NH-16. Officials believe the expressway will not only save time but also improve road safety and reduce fuel consumption by allowing vehicles to maintain steady speeds. The corridor is also expected to support regional development by improving access to markets, industrial hubs, and ports.
