CBI Brings Back Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Member Aman Bhainswal from US
New Delhi | January 7, 2026 The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday successfully facilitated the repatriation of Aman Kumar alias Aman Bhainswal, a key member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, from the United States, officials said. Bhainswal, who is alleged to be a sharpshooter associated with the gang, was wanted by the Haryana Police in connection with multiple serious criminal cases. According to the CBI, an Interpol Red Notice had been issued against Bhainswal at the request of the Haryana Police after he fled to the US in 2024. He is accused of involvement in grave offences including murder, rioting and criminal conspiracy. The agency described him as a notorious criminal and an active member of the organised crime network led by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Officials said Bhainswal had earlier been arrested in India but was later released on bail. Subsequently, he failed to face trial and went absconding, prompting law enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to trace and bring him back to the country. His return marks another step in India’s efforts to crack down on organised crime with international links. The CBI said it has significantly strengthened its global coordination mechanisms in recent years. In 2025 alone, the agency coordinated the return of 47 fugitives wanted in cases ranging from terrorism and organised crime to economic offences. An official noted that bringing back absconders remains a top priority in 2026 as well, with active cooperation from international partners. CBI Director Praveen Sood had earlier stated that India currently has 388 extradition requests pending with various countries. So far, 957 Interpol Red Notices have been issued against fugitives, covering cases related to terrorism, economic offences, money laundering, narcotics, and violent crimes such as murder and kidnapping. The agency’s Global Operations Centre, in coordination with central agencies and state police forces, had brought back 29 fugitives in 2023 and 30 in 2024. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has directed agencies to further intensify extradition efforts and has called for the creation of dedicated units and prison facilities for fugitives across states.
