Janakpuri Tragedy: Officials Suspended After Biker Dies in Open Construction Pit
New Delhi | 7 Feb 2026 The Delhi government has suspended several officials over suspected negligence following the death of a motorcyclist who fell into a construction pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri area. Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood said the pit was dug by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for construction work, and swift action was taken after the incident came to light. After inspecting the spot on Friday morning, the minister said a committee was immediately formed to look into the matter. He stated, "Immediate action was taken under the guidance of the water minister, and after the chief minister's intervention, all officials suspected of negligence have been suspended." FIRs have also been registered against the DJB and the contractor responsible for the work. Sood added that the inquiry will decide further action. "If any DJB officials are found guilty during the inquiry, cases will be registered against them as well. Legal action is also being taken against the contractor for negligence, and arrests are being carried out as part of the ongoing police action," he said. The deceased, Kamal, was a resident of Kailashpuri and worked at a private bank’s call centre. He was returning home from his office in Rohini when the accident happened. Expressing grief, the minister said, "Our pain and sorrow cannot bring the man back, but I assure you that the chief minister is personally monitoring the entire case and ensuring timely updates." He also mentioned that traffic on the busy road connecting Vikaspuri and nearby areas will be affected for some time. "To minimise inconvenience to residents, we are taking necessary steps to ensure smooth movement of traffic on a single carriageway in both directions," he said. A joint inspection by police, civic bodies, traffic officials, DJB and PWD is underway to restore the road and ensure safety norms are strictly followed.
