Delhi High Court Orders Jaideep Sengar to Surrender in Unnao Custodial Death Case
New Delhi | 20 Feb 2026 The Delhi High Court on Friday directed Jaideep Sengar to surrender before jail authorities in connection with his conviction in the custodial death case of the Unnao rape survivor’s father. The court was hearing his plea seeking a further extension of interim bail, granted earlier after suspension of his 10-year sentence. A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Ravinder Dudeja noted that the interim bail, first granted in July 2024 and last extended in April 2025, had not been extended further despite multiple hearings. As Sengar’s counsel requested more time citing health issues, the bench made it clear, saying, "You surrender and then we will see." The court added that since there was no valid extension in place, surrender was mandatory before any fresh request could be considered. The bench also observed, "Although there is no extension of interim suspension of sentence granted, we find he has still not surrendered. Before we proceed to consider his application for further extension of suspension of sentence, we require the appellant to first surrender." Following this, Sengar’s lawyer assured the court that he would surrender by Saturday. The matter has been listed for further hearing next week. Jaideep Sengar, who has spent nearly four years in custody, sought bail extension claiming he is suffering from stage IV oral cancer and requires specialised medical care. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation opposed the plea, alleging that the medical prescription submitted was fabricated. The case relates to the custodial death of the survivor’s father in 2018, for which Jaideep Sengar and his brother Kuldeep Sengar were sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment, with the trial court stating that no leniency could be shown in the killing of a family’s sole breadwinner.
