New Delhi | 23 Feb 2026 Amid rising violence and security operations in parts of Mexico, India has issued a fresh advisory for its nationals living there. The advisory, released on Sunday by the Embassy of India in Mexico City, asks Indian citizens to remain indoors, avoid crowded places, and limit movement until the situation stabilises. In an official statement shared on X, the embassy said, “There are ongoing security operations and related road blockages and criminal activity, Indian nationals in Jalisco State (areas of Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas State (areas of Reynosa and other municipalities), areas of Michoacan State, Guerrero State, and Nuevo Leon State should shelter in place until further notice.” The advisory highlights that certain regions are facing heightened risk due to clashes and law enforcement activity. The embassy also shared a clear checklist for Indian nationals, urging them to avoid areas near police or military operations, stay alert to their surroundings, follow local news closely, and strictly follow instructions from local authorities. Citizens have been advised to “seek shelter and minimize unnecessary movements,” avoid crowds, stay connected with family and friends, and dial emergency number 911 if needed. For assistance, the embassy has shared a helpline number for Indians in Mexico. The advisory comes after clashes broke out following a major army operation against the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. According to reports, cartel chief Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El Mencho, was seriously injured in a shootout in Jalisco and later died while being airlifted to Mexico City. The cartel, often referred to as CJNG, is known for its violent attacks on security forces and is considered one of the most powerful criminal groups in the country, on par with the Sinaloa cartel, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
