India Moves to Strengthen Air Defence as Fourth S-400 System Nears Delivery
New Delhi | 30 March 2026 An Indian Air Force team has reached Russia to inspect the fourth S-400 air defence system, which is expected to be delivered by the end of April and deployed in India’s western sector. According to officials familiar with the development, the system is likely to be stationed in Rajasthan, enhancing the country’s air defence preparedness in a strategically important region. The fifth S-400 unit is expected to be delivered by November this year. This development comes shortly after the Defence Acquisition Council approved the procurement of five additional Russian-origin S-400 Triumf systems. With this, the total number of such advanced air defence units in India is set to increase to 10, significantly boosting the country’s defensive capabilities. India had initially signed a government-to-government agreement with Russia in 2018 to procure five S-400 systems. The defence acquisition process involves multiple stages, including approvals from the Defence Procurement Board, the Defence Acquisition Council, and final clearance by the Cabinet Committee on Security. Officials indicated that the process for acquiring the additional systems is expected to be completed within a year. The S-400 system has proven to be a key component of India’s air defence strategy, capable of countering aircraft, drones, and missile threats. It can also be integrated with short-range systems to create a multi-layered defence shield. Its operational effectiveness was demonstrated during past military operations, where it played a critical role in neutralising aerial threats and strengthening India’s overall defence posture.
